The Bottomline
Bar

Ready to go out for some drinks and
fun on Thursday evenings? Bottomline Bar located on 238th and Bailey is now
re-opened with a fresh new look.
Bottomline is situated 2 blocks away
from 238st and Broadway making it easy for college students to take a cab or
the 1 train home. The atmosphere at the bar can easily be confused with a
techno concert due to the DJs tireless effort to keep people's feet and bodies
moving and dancing. "When you're in the bar it no longer feels like one of
those cheap bars college kids go to, it feels like a NYC club just in a smaller
place", says Adriana Villari a Manhattan College student who is a frequent
Thursday night partier at Bottomline bar.
Although Bottomline has improved
their bar and added many new cocktails many college students from Manhattan
College are scared to enter because of what happened in the late spring of
2009.
"Bottomline closed down due to
an underage girl claiming she was robbed at the bar by one of the
students", says a Manhattan College who refuses to claim her identity but
hinting she is a basketball player for Manhattan College.
Ever since the incident Bottomline
and its patrons required students to stand outside and read off their
information on their IDs in front of a camera, intimidating many Freshmen who
had fakes.
Although he bar patrons no longer
require video tapped proofs of identity they have messed up on the complete do
over of the bar's overall "fresh" look. The dance floor is still very
small and has a mirror still blocking people from dancing in the middle of the
dance floor. The sofas on one's left-hand side are still old and deflated an d
the bathroom size is still crammed close to the dance floor giving off weird
smells as people try to fist pump their night away.
Overall Bottomline's new bar is very
decent looking. The fish bowl cocktails which are as big as basketballs can be
shared between 23 people and are priced decently at $20. In order for Bottomline
to receive a 10/10 rating they will need to work on refurbishing the dance
floor and seating area for students to have a more relaxed night out.
Fenwicks Bar
By: Danae Fahie
Each and every Thursday night, Manhattan College students, among other local residents, get together at one of the local bars in the area. Not wanting to travel too far or head into the city, many students look for a place close to hang out for a few hours after their long and stressful week of classes, assignments and exams.
Fenwicks Bar, located on West 238th Street off of Riverdale Ave and across from Manhattan College’s off campus dorm Overlook, is a fun local bar to mix and mingle with friends, classmates and other locals in the area.
“Fens,” as many Manhattan College students like to call it, offers special deals Monday through Thursday every week. On Mondays, they have the buy one get one free deal. Tuesdays is ladies night. All beers and well drinks are a dollar for the ladies. On Wednesdays, there is an open bar until 12 a.m. Thursdays is “Beat the Clock” night. You can buy a cup of Budweiser for 25 cents, 50 cents, and $1 each hour starting at 8 p.m.
A group of seniors from Manhattan College, that frequent Fenwicks, all agreed that it is a great place to come when they wanted to party within the area.
“It’s a great place to come and just relax and grab a beer with your buddies,” Emmanuela Eke, the group’s spokesperson and an International Relations major at Manhattan college said. “The music is great and you know everybody either because you see them on campus or you have class with them.”
Fenwicks presents a very comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Depending on the crowd, you can either have a really good time or it can be a little dull. The Dj plays good music to help set the mood so that everyone can enjoy themselves throughout the night. However, due to its small venue, “Fens” gets crowded quickly and movement becomes limited. With drinks constantly being toppled over from everyone bumping into one another because of the lack of space, the floors of Fenwicks become a disgusting and sticky mess.
Like any bar, Fenwicks is very strict about who is allowed to enter the premises. The bouncer cracks down on those who have fake identification or are not yet 21 years of age. There are no exceptions to the rules when the bouncer is around. However, some students and locals have managed to find their way into “Fens” without any opposition. The bouncer at “Fens” is only at the door after 8 p.m., so some under 21 regulars who do not want to take the risk of being rejected get to Fenwicks before the bouncer arrives.
Despite its flaws, Fenwicks Bar is a nice place to go when you want to remain close to home to kick back and enjoy yourself over a couple of drinks with your closest friends.
