When it comes to dressing appropriately for the office, we don’t always have to run to pant suits and knee length skirts. Annie Rotundo, an admissions and financial aid counselor at Manhattan College and a Riverdale local manages to balance both professionalism and style.
Annie said her typical style for work is business casual and she tries to buy staple pieces (i.e. the blazer) that she can wear multiple ways. When she's not dressing up for work, she still tries to maintain that casual look. "I'm usually classic, I stick to jeans and button downs, t-shirts and cardigans", said Rotundo.
In the photograph above, Annie is wearing a blazer, ankle-length black pants and black patent leather flats, but chose a colorful printed blouse. This not only adds some needed color to the outfit but the pattern is fun and playful. Her necklace and gold watch are bold accessories that compliment the outfit very well.
While the blazer is a must for every working professional, it doesn’t have to be paired with other pieces that will make the outfit look stiff. Annie’s colorful top accent the blazer well and gave it more of a casual feel, yet still maintaining a look that is appropriate for the office.
As for the pants, instead of wearing the usual black dress pant, Annie’s ankle-length pants are stylish and very Audrey Hepburn. These are great for spring and a balance between pants and capris.
Her shoes are another perfect style must for working women. Although heels are acceptable for work, let’s be honest: they are so not ideal for walking around! Instead of torturing her feet, Annie’s flats allow her to walk around comfortably and not have to worry about the pain of heels. "I'm not a shoe person at all" said Rotundo, " but I have a slight obsession with bags!"

In today’s fashion, its all about taking risks. Leggings have become so popular most people prefer them over jeans, but usually we see them in black, brown, or even gray. Dulsi Nunez, 23, decided to take the legging trend a step further with animal print. Her bold style was well put together, and she describes her typical style as casual and comfortable, with the majority of her outfits consisting of leggings and riding boots.
Her jacket was a shirred cape from New York & Company. Cape jackets have been making a rise in fashion today and can give a more comfortable look than peacoats, but are very stylish and give an outfit something different.
What was most interesting about Dulsi’s look were here hands. Her nails were painted in extreme detail, each one a different design. And what was even more interesting about that- she did them herself! Also, she was wearing a unique cocktail rings. These rings can complete any outfit. Over-sized rings like hers can be found on almost every corner in the streets of New York City and are usually as cheap as $5!
Her purse was clear and plastic from H&M, and her scarf was a gift from her brother, purchased in France! Dulsi’s look was not only chic, but comfortable as well.
Here is Dulsi’s head-to-toe look: Shirred Cape (On Sale for $26.98 – nyandcompany.com), (These prices are estimated): Animal Print Leggings ($15 – Macy’s), Boots ($30 – Payless), Clear Purse ($15 – H&M).

Comfortable & Stylish Winter Wear
Let’s face it- winter wear just is not as fun as summer outfits, but somehow we all must get through the season. It is important to not only look stylish, but comfortable too, which is why sometimes casual is key. When we think of winter, we think of scarves, chunky coats and boots but sometimes less can be more.
Lauren Garrone, shown in the video above, is a 28-year-old sales associate at Designer’s Corner, a boutique located at 3725 Riverdale Avenue. She describes her style as casual and is a self-proclaimed t-shirt and jeans kind of girl and will only be caught in a dress on date or a special occasion. Although only wearing jeans and a t-shirt, her style stuck out. Her casual look was well put-together and had an effortless look to it. She looked comfortable, and although wearing basic pieces, added fun accessories to her outfit to style it up a bit.
She had a pair of Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses at hand ($185.) Sunglasses are a piece that most of us overlook in the winter but cannot live without in the summertime. This accessory is definitely great to use in the winter, the sun is still shining, you know! Her slouchy beret hat is another thing that caught my attention. Some of us do not like hats or think they do not look good on us. These hats sit at the back of your head, and are warm and comfortable, yet very fashion forward.
Here is her head-to-toe outfit choice: slouchy beret hat ($32 – Designer’s Corner,) t-shirt ($25 – C&C California,) black chunky-knit cardigan ($150 – Neiman Marcus Outlet,) jeans ($300 – True Religion,) vintage harness boots ($380 – Frye Boots.) Okay, I know what you are thinking, while Lauren looks great, the prices are way out of the question for most of us. Below you can find Lauren’s outfit at much cheaper prices, with pieces from different stores. Click on each picture for the price and where you can purchase them! You do not have to empty your wallet to get the look!

Challenge the winter weather - wear a dress!
For most college students, getting up for our morning classes is an accomplishment, never mind actually getting dressed up for them. While walking around campus, we see what seems like floods of sweatpants and sweatshirts, with the exception of one or two students dressed to impress.
Shadira Presbot, a Manhattan College sophomore majoring in International Studies, had challenged the winter weather and was wearing a dress. It was a gray dress with different colored stripes on it and was paired with gray tights. Instead of wintery boots, she opted for sparkly ballet flats and gave a nod to the wintery weather with a scarf.
In response to her unusual summer outfit, Presbot said, “Why not? I figure maybe if I don’t feel like I’m in my pajamas, I’ll feel better in my dreaded morning classes.” Sometimes, being too comfy in a warm classroom in the morning is a recipe for disaster…and a nap.
Presbot describes her style as comfy and casual, with a touch of “boho,” (for those of you who don’t know, “Boho” is a style that is a mix between bohemian and hippie style clothing.) As a sales associate at Old Navy, she understands the importance of looking fashionable at a reasonable price, especially as a college student. While she would prefer jeans and a sweatshirt, sometimes she likes to spice up her style with occasional skirts and fun dresses.
Dresses are usually saved for spring and summertime, but if you just cannot seem to accept the fact that it is winter, dresses and skirts can be worn, if worn with tights and either flats, or riding boots. Flip flops in winter are, and always will be, a fashion don’t. Tights are also a must with this look because not only will you want to seem like you are fitting in with the cold weather, you also do not want to freeze outside!
Here is Shadira’s look, head-to-toe: dress – JCPenney $12, tights – H&M $8, ballet flats – New York & Company $29. This look is not only stylish and comfortable, but a great price for anyone, especially students!
